Frequently asked questions

Taking tests on a regular basis ensures safety in everyday life – both in your private environment and at your workplace. Chains of infection can be broken quickly and efficiently only if a person knows that they are infected. The more people in Vienna undergo regular tests, the easier it will be to control COVID-19 and return to a normal everyday life. Moreover, all participants have the possibility of receiving a test certificate, which is necessary for using the services of a hair salon, going to a restaurant or attending a cultural event, in this way supporting the step-by-step reopening process.

All Viennese residents and companies domiciled in Vienna can register. This also applies to persons who do not live but work in Vienna.

All information about the project "Alles gurgelt!" can be found on the website allesgurgelt.at, where you will also find the barcode for accessing the system. If you show this barcode (either in printed format or digitally) at any BIPA outlet in Vienna, you will receive up to 4 test sets.

Starting from 26 March, you can register via the website allesgurgelt.at for the WebApp of the test manufacturer LEAD Horizon (registration of your profile) and will then receive a barcode for accessing the system. If you show this barcode (either in printed format or digitally) at any BIPA outlet in Vienna, you will receive up to 4 test sets.

After performing the test, you can hand in the samples easily on a daily basis at any REWE outlet in Vienna (BILLA, BILLA PLUS, BIPA and PENNY as well as all petrol station shops of BP MERKUR inside, JET BILLA STOP&SHOP, SHELL BILLA Unterwegs). From there, the samples will be sent to the lab. If you hand in your samples before 9 a.m., you will receive the result within a period of 24 hours via email.

Yes, participation in “Alles gurgelt!” and the COVID-19 test sets are free of charge.

The samples will be picked up twice daily (9 a.m.-noon and 2-5 p.m.) at any REWE outlet in Vienna (BILLA, BILLA PLUS, BIPA and PENNY as well as all petrol station shops of BP MERKUR inside, JET BILLA STOP&SHOP, SHELL BILLA Unterwegs).

This dense network of collection points ensures that nearly all inhabitants of Vienna can hand in their COVID-19 test within a maximum walking radius of 11 minutes or a 5-minute drive by car

The current rules as defined by the federal government apply, e.g. wearing a FFP2 mask and maintaining social distancing.

The test corresponds to the highest medical standards, is painless, causes no complications and is evaluated in certified labs by means of the PCR procedure. It corresponds to the requirements defined by law. You will receive a medical report issued by the competent lab. This can be used as an official document for trips, appointments with authorities, etc.

Yes, the PCR test is also a valid certificate for travelling abroad. A medical report is issued if the person tested has verified their identity in advance via the WebApp before the test. The Lifebrain lab makes medical reports digitally available via its medical report portal. As soon as the result is ready, you will receive an email containing a link that enables you to access the medical report by entering your mobile phone number (two-factor authentication). It is not possible to send the medical report by post.

Questions concerning the test procedure

This test used is a PCR test by the LEAD Horizon company. Evaluation of the COVID-19 test by means of the PCR procedure allows for the detection of even minimal amounts of the virus and before the first symptoms occur. The PCR method is considered the reliable “gold standard” among COVID-19 tests and is well established internationally.

A WebApp will guide you through the test procedure. It works by means of self-testing: You rinse your mouth with a saline solution or gargle with it.

You can find the WebApp directly online at lead-horizon.org/public. You do not need to download any app. Optionally, you can also use the QR code that comes with the test set; in this way, you do not have to enter the lead-horizon.org/public link manually. This QR code can be found in the testing instructions.

No, you do not need to download an app. The WebApp described in this FAQ section is a website that you can access with all standard devices or operating systems (laptop/PC/smartphone/tablet) via your browser. Optionally, you can also use the QR code that comes with the test set; in this way, you do not have to enter the lead-horizon.org/public link. This QR code can be found in the testing instructions.

No, “Alles gurgelt!” (“Everyone Gargles!”) is just the name of the information campaign. It is enough to rinse your mouth with the saline solution. In principle, gargling and rinsing your mouth are both efficient ways to ensure a reliable diagnosis of COVID-19; thus, both methods can be used. The twofold advantages of rinsing your mouth/throat are that the spreading of aerosols is prevented when the mouth of the person tested is closed and that even young children find it easier to rinse the mouth instead of gargling. The important thing is to rinse your mouth or gargle for at least 60 seconds.

Both are fine.

The big advantage of gargling/rinsing your mouth is that the entire throat area comes into contact with the saline solution. As a result, a sample of the entire inside of the mouth/throat is taken and collected in the tube, while test staff can only take a sample of a very small area of the throat with the cotton tip. Moreover, gargling/rinsing permits taking a sample comfortably and reliably at home, which would be difficult with a throat swab.

The PCR method is very sensitive and therefore able to detect an infection several days, and at least 3 days, before any symptoms occur. This means that if you take a PCR test and this test is negative, it is extremely probable that you cannot infect others over the next 3 days. This creates a high level of safety for a longer period.

Contrary to antigen tests, which are conducted by taking a nose or throat swab and are often experienced as unpleasant, this self-test is completely painless. The sample is taken by the tested persons themselves by rinsing the mouth or gargling with a saline solution.

As a rule, the result is available within a period of 24 hours after arrival of the sample at the lab.

The Lifebrain lab makes medical reports available via its medical report portal. As soon as the result is ready, you will receive an email containing a link that enables you to access the medical report by entering your mobile phone number (two-factor authentication). The medical report can only be accessed via this portal; it is NOT possible to send it by post!

Yes, according to the current state of knowledge.

There is no age limit. Once a child is old enough to rinse their mouth with a saline solution and then spit the saliva through the transfer tube into the buffer tube, the test can be performed.

Yes, this is not a problem. It is not necessary to brush your teeth before testing, but it is advisable not to return any coarse food residues with the sample.

Both ingredients are safe for adults, children and pregnant women. Just rinse your mouth.

This is a solution of common cooking salt; swallowing it does not pose any health risk.

The test complies with the highest quality standards. The PCR tests are exclusively conducted by certified labs checked by independent, official inspection authorities, hence ensuring very reliable results.

You must follow the testing instructions very precisely. Please closely follow the instructions that come with the test to avoid an incorrect test result.

In principle, samples can be stored for up to 7 days. However, the test should be returned for analysis as soon as possible to ensure rapid result delivery.

No, the sample should not be sent by post. It can be handed in easily on a daily basis at any REWE outlet in Vienna (BILLA, BILLA PLUS, BIPA and PENNY as well as all petrol station shops of BP MERKUR inside, JET BILLA STOP&SHOP, SHELL BILLA Unterwegs). From there, the samples will be sent to the lab. If you hand in your samples before 9 a.m., you will receive the result within a period of 24 hours via email.

If you hand in your sample before 9 a.m., you will receive the test result not later than in the morning of the following day. If you hand in your sample before 2 p.m., you will receive the test result not later than in the afternoon of the following day.

In case of a positive test result, the person tested is informed of this result via email. The labs are obligated under law to inform the health authority about every positive test result. The health authority will then contact you. Until this contact is established, please remain in self-isolation.

This is true. This safeguards testing capacities and the related, rapid delivery of test results (within a period of 24 hours after arrival at the lab).

We strongly dissuade you from purchasing PCR tests or other COVID-19 tests via online marketplaces, as it is impossible to guarantee that these are genuine test sets as used by the City of Vienna. In this case, moreover, you are running the risk of not knowing whether these test sets are still in their original packaging. All test sets produced after 23 February also contain the information that these tests are not for sale. A sufficient number of test sets is available free of charge at all BIPA outlets in Vienna; hence, it is not necessary to purchase them online.

Questions concerning the WebApp

No, you do not need to download an app. The WebApp described in this FAQ section is a website that you can access with all standard devices or operating systems (laptop/PC/smartphone/tablet) via your browser. Optionally, you can also use the QR code that comes with the test set; in this way, you do not have to enter the lead-horizon.org/public link manually. This QR code can be found in the testing instructions.

The website is available in the following languages: German, English, Portuguese, Spanish, Slovak, Bulgarian, Romanian, Hungarian, Croatian and Turkish.

The QR code is in the self-test set packaging. The WebApp will open after scanning it with the camera of your smartphone. Of course, you can also access the website with your smartphone directly via your browser. For this, please enter the address printed on the packaging of your test set.

You can find your sample number on the slip enclosed with your test set. This number always begins with LHI. Each sample number can only be used once.

When you open the WebApp, the camera of your smartphone/laptop/tablet is activated and you will be asked to hold your passport, ID card or the back of your e-card towards the camera, if you want to verify your identity. The scan function of your camera will then scan your passport or ID card. This procedure has to be carried out only once when establishing your user profile.

While conducting your COVID-19 test, a video recording is carried out, which serves to prevent any sort of cheating or fraud during the test. After the test result has become available, the document scanned at the beginning is printed on the medical report, which can be optionally downloaded; this allows for additional identification, for example when crossing national borders.

The WebApp works on all standard laptops/PCs or tablets.

You do not necessarily need any proof of identity, and you can skip this step in the WebApp. This verification of identity is recommended if you need a medical report that, by means of your passport, ID card or e-card, confirms the fact that you have performed the test (e.g. for confirmation when crossing national borders). If you skip the verification of identity or if this verification is interrupted, you will still receive the test result after the test procedure was concluded, but you will not receive any valid medical report that entitles you to go to a hair salon or use any other, similar services.

For the WebApp, the scanning function for passports, ID card or e-cards was integrated to ensure proof of identity. If the automatic scanning process does not work, you can choose to click on the “manual data entry” option. At the moment, it is possible to scan passports, ID cards and e-cards, but no other forms of personal ID documents. If you have no document of the type mentioned above, please continue without proof of identity. You will still receive a test result, but no medical report you can use for going to a hair salon or restaurant.

Please check whether you have allowed your device to use the camera. You can change this in the settings of your device. If you are using a company device, this problem may be due to the settings installed by your IT department. Please contact this department/the person in charge or use a different device. As an alternative, you can also perform the test without verification of identity. Please remember, however, that in this case you will not receive a medical report.

Yes, you must state your social security number, if you have one. If you have no social security number, you must follow a specific procedure for entering your data: 0000+your date of birth in the day/month/year format (e.g. 0000241290).

Please recheck your data input. Maybe you have overlooked the how-to instructions in the WebApp. If you have a non-Austrian or no social security number, you must follow a specific procedure for entering your data: 0000+your date of birth in the day/month/year format (e.g. 0000241290).

In principle, it is not possible to evaluate a sample without use of the WebApp and, hence, without stating your data. In case of incomplete or missing data, samples will not be evaluated by the lab. If you have no possibility of handling the test digitally via WebApp, please contact the hotline 01/90 223.

Of course, your data will be treated confidentially and stored only for a short period (14 days) in order to be able to issue a medical report on request as well as to be able to notify the health authority accordingly, as is mandatory under the Austrian Epidemics Act.

The test set manufacturer LEAD Horizon GmbH processes your data with your consent. Your data will be transmitted to the Lifebrain lab, which further processes your data on its own responsibility. The lab is obligated under the law to communicate the results to the competent health authority. Your data will not be disclosed to third parties.

No, REWE cannot view your data (this also applies to all of its outlets or shops, such as BILLA, BILLA PLUS, BIPA and PENNY as well as the petrol station shops BP MERKUR inside, JET BILLA STOP&SHOP, SHELL BILLA Unterwegs). Only the staff of the lab and of the test set manufacturer LEAD Horizon have access to your data. Since data privacy is very important to us, we store your data for a period not exceeding 14 days. After this, the data are deleted.

The WebApp sends out the emails instantaneously. If you have tried to register via a company email address and have received no email, please contact your in-house IT department. It might be that your firewall is blocking the service@lead-horizon.org sending address. Another possibility is that the email has ended up in your spam folder – please check this, too. If several minutes have gone by without your receiving an email either in your inbox or in your spam folder, this may be because your server (including e.g. GMX, Yahoo, etc.) retrieves emails sent to you at longer intervals and not continuously. In this case, please wait or select "skip verification” in the email verification. If you have an alternative email address, please use it.

When entering the phone number required for communicating your test result, you should make sure to enter the correct area code (e.g. +43 or 0). If you enter your phone number without a prefix, it may be that you will receive no code for downloading your test result.

It is important to input the data in the correct order. This means that you have to enter first the city/town, the street name and the postal code. Then the system will automatically suggest an existing address with the help of Google. Select this address and only then enter e.g. the number of your flat and/or “Stiege” (building unit). If you enter your flat number before this, Google may not be able to recognise your address and, thus, will not suggest one, resulting in a system error.

Questions concerning the test result

Yes, the test sets will also be analysed during weekends.

The Lifebrain lab makes medical findings available via its medical report portal. As soon as the result is ready, you will receive an email containing a link that enables you to access the medical report by entering your mobile phone number (two-factor authentication). The medical report can only be accessed via this portal. It is NOT possible to send the medical report by post!

If you have handed in your test sample after 2 p.m. at a REWE outlet in Vienna (BILLA, BILLA PLUS, BIPA and PENNY as well as at a petrol station shop of BP MERKUR inside, JET BILLA STOP&SHOP, SHELL BILLA Unterwegs), it is possible that it will only be picked up the next day, since the pick-up times of the Austrian Post are from 9 a.m. to noon and from 2 to 5 p.m. As a result, you may receive your test result only the day after next. Another reason might be that you have not completed the entry of your data in the WebApp. You should have received a confirmation email from LEAD Horizon with the note “All done!”. Results can only be delivered if all data were entered correctly. For further information on emails, see the question "I have received no email when registering – what is the problem?”.

The link to the lab report leads to a PDF file. Any device that is able to open a PDF file should also be able to open the lab report. If it is still not possible to open the report on your mobile phone, you have the option of opening the email on a computer and following the link to the lab report there. If you have conducted the process via the phone hotline, you can request your test result there.

If you have skipped the identity check or if the identity check was interrupted, you will still receive a test result, but not a medical report from the lab.

In case of a positive test result, the person tested is informed via email. The labs are obligated under law to inform the health authority of every positive test result. The health authority will then contact you. Until this contact is established, please remain in self-isolation.

Yes, the test set corresponds to all legal requirements of the Austrian COVID-19 Entry Regulation dated 5 January 2021. The test procedure by means of throat rinsing was designated as a recommended procedure by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Yes, this is possible. The test set complies with all legal requirements and does not count as a home test according to the currently valid law. The product is a set for independent sample collection at home, but the PCR test itself is carried out in a lab. After evaluation of your sample, you will receive a medical laboratory report, which you can submit in order to use these services.

Yes, the test set corresponds to all legal requirements of the Austrian COVID-19 Entry Regulation dated 5 January 2021. However, for this purpose, it is necessary to first complete the identity check in the WebApp during the test procedure. During this check, a photo with ID is taken of you. As soon as the test result is ready, it can be printed on the medical report, which can be optionally downloaded.

The moment of sample collection is used to calculate the period of validity. Therefore, if you have collected the sample on Monday at 8 a.m., the result of your test is valid for 72 hours (retroactively) from this moment. For this reason, we recommend that you hand in your sample as soon as possible after performing the test.

The medical report of the lab is the most important document. The medical report comprising proof of identity is another service by the test provider that serves to prove that the person identified in the medical report is really the person who underwent the test. Ideally, you should have both documents with you.
